Chauncy who, with Jonathan Edwards, was the leading New England minister of his time, "was honest as a patriot, and amiable as a private Christian," as well as "illustrious as a minister of religion." The Appendix consists of an "account of his family," and a bibliography entitled "catalogue of the printed works of Dr. Chauncy." Clarke was Chauncy's assistant, and took over his ministerial duties.
