The deceased Emerson and his son, who delivered the sermon, were ancestors of Ralph Waldo. DAB describes the deceased as "an industrious scholar who prayed every night that none of his descendants might ever be rich." The author, his son, says, "he was able to pray in the family, in the absence of my grandfather, before he was eight years of age, to the education and astonishment of those who attended on the exercises of the family...He was particularly attached to those doctrines which are called Calvinistic."
