Putnam [1835-1863], born in Cornish, New Hampshire, graduated from West Point in 1857. He was taken prisoner by the Confederates in Montgomery, Alabama. After his release, he served in the First Battle of Bull Run and was brevetted major for gallantry. He received his promotion to Captain in 1863, but had already been an acting Brigadier General of the New Hampshire Volunteer Regiment for several months. He led the 2nd Brigade at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner and was killed by a musket ball. He was made Brevet Colonel on the day of his death.
