TREASON IN CONGRESS. SPEECH OF HON. JAMES A. GARFIELD, OF OHIO, IN REPLY TO THE SPEECH OF HON. ALEXANDER LONG IN FAVOR OF ABANDONING THE WAR AND RECOGNIZING THE SOUTHERN CONFEDERACY.

[Washington: L. Towers, 1864]. Caption title, as issued. 8pp. Untrimmed, with dusted margins. Uncut folio leaf. Good+.

The future President says, sarcastically, "Mr. Chairman: I should be obliged to you if you would direct the Sergeant-at-Arms to bring a white flag and plant it in the aisle between myself and my colleague who has just addressed you." He forcefully rebuts the arguments for surrender. Long was a Democratic Congressman from Garfield's Ohio.
