The Introduction is signed 'E.M.C.', which stands, evidently, for E.M. Cravath. It explains the beginnings of Fisk University and its Jubilee Singers. The Preface to the Music, by Theodore Frelinghuysen Seward, explains that the songs "are never 'composed,' after the manner of ordinary music, but spring into life, ready made, from the white heat of religious fervor during some protracted meeting in church or camp."
Words and music are printed. Index is included.
