WHO URGED THE DRAFT? THE ADMINISTRATION VINDICATED BY ITS ENEMIES.

[New York: 1863]. 8pp, disbound, caption title [as issued]. Printed in two columns per page. Light foxing, margin spotting, Good+.

This pamphlet documents that New York Democrats, who now oppose a draft, vigorously advocated it in 1862. Their "present clamor against the draft," just a year after their strong demand for compulsory service, "is as senseless as it is dishonest." The pamphlet singles out Governor Seymour as the champion hypocrite. As late as August and September 1862, Democrats, including Archbishop Hughes, supported a draft.
