The Society's purpose is "to improve those qualities with which God in his infinite wisdom has endowed us." Membership was open to students of Monmouth College-- unless an applicant received "four negative votes." Members had to engage in "Performances," defined as "Declamation, Essay, Oration and Debate." In addition to the Constitution, By-Laws and a Penal Code [imposing monetary fines for various infractions] are printed.
Monmouth College was founded in 1853 under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church. It was one of the earliest American co-educational colleges.
