Major shareholders in The Union Pacific Railroad created the Credit Mobilier Company to finance construction of the railroad with unmarketable bonds. Scandal erupted when the Company bribed certain Congressmen by giving them shares in the Company. Several members of the House were censured and others, including Garfield, implicated. Garfield denied any misbehavior and published this pamphlet, showcasing testimony from the congressional hearings, to prove his point. Item #32455
