Rhode Island Senator Nehemiah Knight vigorously defends the American tariff system, argues that tariffs enhance American industry and the coasting trade, that tariffs are not responsible for problems encountered by Southern commercial establishments, and urges a tariff on cotton goods. Southern states, particularly South Carolina, deemed the tariffs of 1828 and 1832 unconstitutional; Southern opposition led to the nullification crisis.
