THE EXCELLENCE OF THE GOSPEL VISIBLE IN THE WRETCHEDNESS OF PAGANISM. A DISCOURSE DELIVERED DECEMBER 20, 1797, BEING THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS ORDINATION.

Newburyport: Printed by A. March, Jan. 1798. 28pp, with the half title [light rubberstamp in blank portion]. Disbound, lightly foxed, Good+.

An Errata appears at the bottom of page 27; page 28 is headed, "Lines, with some alteration, sung after the sermon." Several aspects of the wretchedness of Paganism are examined: "The religion of Zoroaster allows incest," "licentiousness of the Spartans in the conjugal relation." "In Peru it was customary to fat and eat their own children born of captives, whom as concubines they kept for that purpose." Having "rejected christianity," the French "at pleasure dissolve the marriage relation." And so on.
