According to the Preface, dated April 1845, the pamphlet is an "unrevised fragment, found among the papers of the late Rev. Sydney Smith." It proves that all his "efforts were exerted for the promotion of religious freedom." Smith was an Anglican minister who urged religious toleration and religious and political freedom for Catholics.
