Laurens of South Carolina was President of the Continental Congress from November 1, 1777 to December 9, 1778. Thomson was appointed Secretary of the First Continental Congress in September 1774 and remained in that post under every Congress up to 1789. On October 29, 1777, he assumed the duties of President after the departure of Hancock, until Laurens was elected on November 1.
