Senator Douglas of Illinois was the presidential nominee of the regular Democratic Party in 1860. Realizing late in the campaign that he would lose the election, he campaigned valiantly for preservation of the Union. Exhausting himself, he died in early 1861, his final words urging support for the Constitution and laws. Item #37097
