THE PRESIDENT AND MRS. TAYLOR REQUEST THE FAVOR OF MR. & MRS. WHITE'S COMPANY AT DINNER ON THURSDAY JANY 31ST AT 6 O'CLOCK.
[Washington: 1850]. Printed invitation, 4-1/4" x 6-3/4," in elegant typescript, completed in manuscript. Old folds. Very Good.
On January 29, 1850, Senator Henry Clay introduced the Bill that would become the Compromise of 1850. Several days earlier, President Taylor had sent his Message to Congress proposing delay in resolving the issue of statehood for California and New Mexico. Clay's Compromise Resolutions conflicted with the President's proposal. This invitation, to Congressman Hugh White of New York, a Whig like President Taylor, was perhaps prompted by these events.
