THE BARBARISM OF SLAVERY. MR. MADISON THOUGHT IT WRONG TO ADMIT IN THE CONSTITUTION THE IDEA OF PROPERTY IN MEN. SPEECH OF HON. CHARLES SUMNER, ON THE BILL FOR THE ADMISSION OF KANSAS AS A FREE STATE. IN THE UNITED STATES SENATE, JUNE 4, 1860.

[Washington: Buell & Blanchard. Republished by the Congressional Republican Committee, [1860]. 32pp, folded gatherings, untrimmed, with caption title [as issued]. Some spine loss, resulting in detachment of first leaf. Good plus.

The most interesting thing about this common imprint is that an early owner wrote in ink, above and to the left of "Slavery" in the title, the word "Anti-".
The Speech marked Sumner's return to the Senate after his four-year absence caused by the brutal beating that Brooks of South Carolina inflicted on him. His maiden speech characteristically attacks slavery. This printing includes the insulting remarks of Chesnut and Hammond of South Carolina, and Sumner's statement on the floor of the Senate that he would include those remarks in an Appendix to the Speech.
