DIE BARBAREI DER SKLAVEREI : REDE DES SENATOR CHAS. SUMNER AUS ANLASS DER BILL UBER AUFNAHME VON KANSAS ALS FREISTAAT IN DEN BUND.

[Washington? 1860]. 40pp. Caption title, as issued. Disbound, else Very Good.

This is the translation into German of Sumner's passionate speech describing the barbarism of American Slavery. German-American immigrants, who tilted strongly against Slavery, became increasingly influential in American political life; Republicans campaigned hard for their support.
The Speech marked Sumner's return to the Senate after his four-year absence caused by the brutal beating that Brooks of South Carolina inflicted on him. He characteristically attacks slavery. This printing includes the insulting remarks of Chesnut and Hammond of South Carolina, and Sumner's statement on the floor of the Senate that he would include those remarks in an Appendix to the Speech.
