Forrest's reputation as a brilliant Confederate Cavalry General was tarnished by his troops' massacre of colored Union troops at Fort Pillow. Before the War, he was a successful dealer in slaves. Memphis city directories prominently noted his success in that industry.
After the War, Slavery having been abolished, Forrest tried his hand at insurance, becoming President of the Planters Insurance Company of Tennessee. "On the 10th day of December, 1866, the Planters' Insurance Company was incorporated, and thereafter it conducted a general fire insurance business in the City of Memphis up to the year 1885." [Planters Ins. Co. v. Tennessee, 161 U.S. 193, 194. 1896.]. He also became the first Grand Wizard of the newly founded Ku Klux Klan.
