"Of source value for the emancipation struggle" [Ragatz]. The Anti-Slavery Monthly Reporter, edited by British abolitionist Zachary Macauley, became the Anti-Slavery Reporter in 1830. A thorough chronicle of Slavery in the British West Indies, it urges support for the abolition of slavery in the British colonies and prints eye-witness reports of the cruelty of slavery, mistreatment of slaves, slave laws, efforts to gain emancipation.
Frequent stories identify the slaves, plantation, and participants in notable events. For example, the April 1829 report prints "Cruelties of Mr. and Mrs. Moss, of the Bahamas, Towards a Female Slave." Reports focus on slavery in Mauritius, Jamaica, Haiti, the Bahamas. Reporting also includes articles on the "Civil Rights of Free Black and Coloured in Habitants of our Colonies" (June 1829), global anti-slavery conventions and meetings, and an extensive account of the General Meeting of the Society with remarks by William Wilberforce (June 1830).
