The Knights of Labor became a formidable opponent of powerful concentrations of capital. In 1884 and 1885 the Knights ordered strikes against Jay Gould's railroads. Variations of this pamphlet were frequently issued, probably corresponding to the adoption of the Constitutions in different cities.
The Knights of Labor was formed, its Preamble states, to counter "the alarming development and aggression of aggregated wealth," to the detriment of "the toiling masses."
