FRED DOUGLASS AND HIS MULE; A STORY OF THE WAR. BY BRICKTOP.

New York: Published by Collin & Small, 113 Fulton Street, 1873. 95, [1 blank] pp. Disbound. Light to moderate foxing. Good.

Wright attributes authorship to George C. Small, a New York humorist. "Small was originally a carpenter and his first earnings from writing came from Fox's Police Gazette. In July 1868 Hunter & Co. published Bummer Boy, a 'Spoony' Burlesque by 'That Brick.' Small was known under the pseudonym 'Bricktop' and his books were the foundation of the publishing house of Collins & Small" ["George G. Small", March 8, 2012, online article by John Adcock at Blogspot, accessed May 01, 2026.]
The book has many full-page, humorous illustrations, often portraying "Fred Douglass" in an offensively caricatured manner.
