MAYSVILLE EAGLE - - EXTRA. TUESDAY, AUG. S, '53. 8 O'CLK, A. M. KENTUCKY ELECTION. MASON COUNTY. CONGRESS SENATE HOUSE OF REP.

Maysville KY: 1853. Narrow folio broadside, 5" x 12." Mild foxing, mostly at the edges, Very Good.

Richard Collins published and edited the Maysville Eagle for about thirty years [c. 1845-1875]. At this time it supported the Whig Party. Maysville has an interesting place in Kentucky history. President Jackson's veto of the Maysville Road Bill sparked a heated debate about the power of Congress to fund internal improvements entirely within a State. And Maysville's location on the Ohio River, a stone's throw from that Free State, was evidently a favorite stop on the Underground Railroad.
This broadside reports election news from ten towns in Mason County, including Maysville: Four candidates for the U. S. House, four running for U. S. Senate, obviously exciting and interesting races. Collins adds his observations: "Returns from Bourbon and Franklin are favorable- - but our latest dispatch is from Paris, and states that Breckinridge, [Dem.] is re-elected over Gov. Letcher, [W,] by means of outrageous frauds in Fayette and Scott."
Collins was not a fan of Democratic Congressman Breckinridge, who in a few years would become Vice President under James Buchanan, and later a Civil War Confederate General. His opponent, the Whig Letcher, was a popular former Congressman and Kentucky Governor. Breckinridge "received a large margin in Owen County, which reported 123 more votes than eligible voters living in the county. Grateful for the support of the reliably Democratic county, he gave his son John Witherspoon Breckinridge the nickname 'Owen'," [Wikipedia.]
