Item #41503 THE REJECTED MINISTER. Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren.

THE REJECTED MINISTER.

New York: Henry Anstice, [1832]. Lithograph broadside, 8" x 9-1;/2." Trimmed to image, light to moderate foxing. Rare. Good plus.

"Van Buren, whose nomination as Minister to London in 1831 was rejected by the Senate, was elected Vice-President in 1832" [Weitenkampf]. Formerly Jackson's Secretary of State, Van Buren lost the vote when Vice President Calhoun, as President of the Senate, cast the deciding vote against the President's nominee. Jackson thus went looking for a new Vice President. Van Buren was his man.
Jackson is staggering under the weight of Van Buren on his back. Van Buren, "with $18000 projecting from his pocket" [Weitenkampf], exclaims "Thus only can I reach the Throne." Jackson complains "No, Matty, by the Eternal, you'll sink me with you." The subcaption reads "We can never make him President, without first making him Vice-president."
