SCHEDULE OF EXPENDITURES FOR THE MAINTENANCE OF THE POOR OF NEW-CASTLE COUNTY, FROM JAN. 1802, TO JAN. 1803; MADE BY THE TRUSTEES OF THE POOR OF SAID COUNTY.

Wilmington, Del. Printed by James Wilson, Market-Street, 1803. 30pp. Disbound, untrimmed, lightly toned. Else Very Good. Contemporary ownership inscription of Thomas Montgomery, Esqr.

A rare record of the administration of Delaware's Poor Laws in the early 19th century.
The pamphlet begins with the minutes of a meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Poor of New-Castle County on 18 April 1803. The Meeting, whose minutes are signed in type by Secretary John Crow on 7 July 1803, reported on Crow's inventory of receipts and expenses on behalf of 97 persons, mostly maintained "in the house" established for their assistance.
The pamphlet prints an extremely detailed Schedule of Expenditures, providing a revealing picture of the execution of the Poor Laws: cost of wood and from whom purchased; payment to overseers, trustees, secretary, matron; "Junk"; "Beef, Pork, and other Meat"; brandy, spirits, wine [more than fifty gallons]; tobacco, attorney fees, wages, sundries, other long schedules of receipts and expenditures.
