David Marks was a well-known Freewill Baptist minister. This sect's "free will" doctrine "likely appealed to the adventurous, independent mettle of his rugged followers. . . They embraced a number of causes, from abolition and temperance to Sunday school and missions, with great gusto, as might be expected from men and women with the fortitude to endure the hardships of the frontier." ["Free Will Baptists on the Frontier" by Eric K. Thomsen, 10 September 2018, Helwys Society Forum, accessed May 01, 2026.]
These issues discuss the tenets and progress of Freewill Baptists, emphasize their adherence to the temperance and antislavery movements, and express classic anti-Semitic views. The "Children's Department" of the March 11 issue asks, "Are There Any Jews Living Now?" The Answer: "The spirit of the Jews" reveals them as "the most unbelieving and perverse of mankind. If they received especial favors, they were scarcely grateful for them, but were desirous of something more or different than what they possessed." Item #41757
