The caption title calls this Vol. III, No. 1. The wrapper calls it Vol. I, No. 1. According to Lomazow, the wrapper is incorrect. The Magazine's first issue was in January 1818. "A religious, literary and miscellaneous magazine, considered by some to be a precursor of Southern Literary Messenger" [Lomazow].
This issue contains a review of Henry Obookiah's Memoirs; and prints 'Mission to the Sandwich Islands,' whose participants included Hiram Bingham, Vermont Missionary, and others.
