New Bern, NC: E.L. Davenport & Co., 1862. Folio. 14" x 20". 4pp, printed in six columns per page. Old folds, several fox blotches. Good plus.
E.L. Davenport & Company issued the 'Newbern Daily Progress' and 'Newbern Weekly Progress' from 1853 until some time in 1862. As the area came under Union control, it re-emerged as a newspaper run by a staff of Union soldiers, and pro-Union in content. [Hutchinson: NEW BERN, Arcadia Publishing, 2000, p.15.]
This issue was printed after the Union captured New Bern. George Mills Joy, the Army's Recruiting Officer, is listed as the new editor. Among the many advertisements is one signed in type by Joy himself: FREEMEN OF North Carolina, Rally to the Support of the Stars & Stripes!"
This issue prints war news and adjudications by the Provost Court, mostly on charges of drunkenness and disorderly conduct. "Sam. Smith, Colored," was reprimanded and discharged for being without a pass. Advertisements comprise the bulk of the printed material. Item #41795
