THE BLACK BRIGADE PLANTATION SONG & DANCE SUNG WITH GREAT SUCCESS AT BRYANT'S MINSTRELS. WORDS & MUSIC COMPOSED BY DAN. D. EMMETT.
New York: Published by Wm. A. Pond & Co., [1863]. Folio, 10" x 13-1/4." Decorative title page with a variety of type styles and sizes. Disbound. A short, closed margin tear without loss. Very Good.
Words and music by Emmett are printed for his song, "The Black Brigade." In the usual crude dialect: "Dar's someting rong a brewin; Gwine to jine de Union."
Rick Stattler at Swann's nicely described this piece for its 2020 sale: "This piece of sheet music may have been inspired by the formation of the great United States Colored Troops regiments in 1863, but as written in dialect by one of the founders of blackface minstrelsy, it offers a mocking perspective on black patriotism: 'Dar's someting rong a brewin' / Gwine to join the Union!' "
