Athens, Ga. Gazette Job Establishment, 1849. 47, [1 blank] pp, interspersed with several blank leaves. Original cloth, with "Supreme Court Manual" in gilt lettering on front cover. Covers rubbed, spine reinforced with early tape, text uniformly browned. Good plus, with the prominent ownership signature of "David Irwin, Marietta Geo January 8th 1850." Our best guess is that this is Judge David Irwin [1807-1885], a Whig, highly regarded lawyer and judge, "Noted jurist and pioneer of Cobb County" [Find a Grave].

Thomas Reade Rootes Cobb, brother of the politician Howell Cobb, was an influential author and lawyer. He wrote 'An Historical Sketch of Slavery' and 'An Inquiry into the Law of Negro Slavery in the United States,' was Reporter of the Supreme Court of Georgia, and a founder of the University of Georgia Law School. He was also an articulate advocate of the Southern Rights doctrine and, after Lincoln's election, a brilliant orator for Secession.
Cobb's prefatory Advertisement explains that he wrote the book to "remove" lawyers' complaints about "the difficulty of carrying causes to the Supreme Court."
