Gay was Pastor of the Church in Hingham. His Election Sermon dissects "the character of a good Ruler," who should be "the Light of his People. . . Light is an Emblem of Authority." Gay's model for a good ruler is the Biblical David, "a Man of War, eminently qualified, not only to sit on the Throne, and judge his People, but also to march at the Head of Armies into the Field, and fight their Battles."
