A SAMPLE OF DEMOCRATIC WHITE SUPREMACY IN NORTH CAROLINA. JUDGE WINSTON'S DREAM OF RIDING THE DISTRICT WITH GEORGE H. WHITE THE NEGRO OF "INFLOOENCE". ARE THE PEOPLE OF NORTH CAROLINA GOING TO ELECT JUDGE FRANCIS D. WINSTON LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR?

[North Carolina: 1904]. Broadside, oblong 10-1/8" x 14." An uncolored cartoon "Broadside from the Populist party attempting to discredit the Democratic candidate Judge Francis D. Winston" [OCLC]. Signed in the print at the lower left, "F.A. Hull. 1904." Light margin discoloration, chip from blank portion of upper right corner. Else Very Good.

From the David Rubenstein Rare Book Library at Duke: "1904 political cartoon by F. A. Hull depicting Judge Francis D. Winston, who is white, riding in a horse-drawn carriage with Hon. George H. White, who is Black, and stereotypically portrayed as a flashy - dressing, cigar-smoking, blinged-out fat cat. Shown attached to the carriage is 'Judge Winston's letter', dated 1890, which solicits White's political support by requesting that he put in a good word for Winston at the Judicial Convention. The foreground displays the sign: "A sample of Democratic white supremacy in North Carolina. Judge Winston's dream of riding the district with George H. White, the Negro of 'inflooence'."
The Democrat Winston had originally been a Republican and, as the broadside demonstrates, entirely comfortable in a political alliance with African Americans. His conversion to the Democrats occurred, he said, because he opposed including African Americans in a coalition of Republicans with the Populists. This broadside attempts to discredit his White Supremacist pretensions. Nevertheless, Winston was elected Lieutenant-Governor in 1904.
George H. White, "The Negro of Inflooence" who is disgustingly caricatured in this broadside, was "the last African-American congressman during the beginning of the Jim Crow era and the only African American to serve in Congress during his tenure" ]Wikipedia]. He served two terms in Congress, from 1897 to 1901. An early member of the NAACP, he was the founder of Whitesboro, a planned community for African-Americans near Cape May, New Jersey
