[Confederate SS Georgia]:

DISTRICT COURT OF THE UNITED STATES. MASSACHUSETTS, SS. THE "GEORGIA" AND CARGO [IN PRIZE].

[Boston: 1864]. Three printed broadside certifications, completed in manuscript, each about 8" x 13" and signed by Prize Commissioner John Lovell, each attesting to his examination of three witnesses in the case of the CSS Georgia, "a vessel taken as prize and brought into the port of Boston." Each witness is examined "upon the Standing Interrogatories established by this Court." Attached to each certification is a "true copy" of each witness's answers to those interrogatories, signed and attested. Each document attached with a green ribbon at top margin. Very Good.
The depositions include those of Frith B. Atkinson (a crew member aboard the USS Niagara, 6 pp.); E. McElmell (who claims a share in the prize, 3 pp.); and William Richardson (from Liverpool, who was aboard the prize "Georgia" when it was taken, 10 pp.)
[with] folio manuscript document, folded to [4]pp, each page 8-1/2" x 13-1/4," comprising testimony of a Liverpool Broker for the sale of ships. He discusses his examination of the Georgia "then lying in the Birkenhead docks."

The CSS Georgia was originally built as a fast merchantman named 'Japan'. The Confederate States purchased it in 1863 at Dumbarton, Scotland. The ship was outfitted with guns and commissioned as the CSS Georgia, under the command of William Lewis Maury. She captured nine prizes but was sold in June 1864 to a Liverpool merchant in spite of protests from the United States Minister to Great Britain. The ship returned to sea in August 1864 and was captured by the US Navy frigate Niagara off Portugal. She was then sent to Boston and sold as a lawful prize. Item #42241
