Williamsburg VA: 1816. Printed folio document, 12" x 15," completed in elegant ink manuscript, with full paper seal on lower left corner. Signed by Nicholas in bottom right corner. Several folds, with spotting around some fold lines, lightly toned, Very Good, professionally matted.
Wilson Cary Nicholas [1761-1820] was the 19th Governor of Virginia (1814-1816). His busy public career included terms in the Virginia House of Delegates, the United States Senate, Port Collector of Norfolk, and as a Virginia delegate from Albemarle County to the Philadelphia Constitutional Convention. He favored adoption of the Constitution.
Hammilton was likely James Hammilton [Hamilton] [1769-1822], born in Prince George's County, Maryland, son of William Hamilton [1733-1786], and living in Monongalia County, Virginia, by 1786. We found this land grant recorded in the Sims Index to Land Grants in West Virginia at page 467. [SIMS INDEX TO LAND GRANTS IN WEST VIRGINIA, Charleston, WV: 1952.]
Monongalia County seceded from the state of Virginia and joined the Union as West Virginia in 1863. Item #42288
