Beneath the names of Ingersoll and Stewart, the names of 25 electors are boldly printed in a single column. Fine. Matted and framed with the following two items.
[matted with] Document signed by Fillmore, printed in elegant typescript and completed in manuscript, directing the Secretary of State "to affix the Seal of the United States to the certification of the supplementary commercial convention in the Netherlands of the 26th of August last." Dated "21st Feby, 1853." Single page, 7-3/4" x 9-3/4." Matted and framed adjacent to the foregoing broadside. Mild toning, Very Good.

This rare American Party broadside was printed on cloth for the 1856 presidential election in Pennsylvania. Former President Fillmore, with former Democrat Andrew Donelson as his running mate, headed the Know Nothing Party, whose primary concern was the elimination of foreign influence in American life, particularly the influence of Roman Catholicism. The anti-Irish, anti-Catholic riots in Philadelphia gave Know-Nothings reason to hope for electoral success in 1856. However, they won just under 18% of the popular vote, third and last behind Pennsylvanian James A. Buchanan and Republican John C. Fremont.
