THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER, AND ADMINISTRATION OF THE SACRAMENTS, AND OTHER RITES AND CEREMONIES OF THE CHURCH, ACCORDING TO THE USE OF THE PROTESTANT EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA: TOGETHER WITH THE PSALTER, OR PSALMS OF DAVID.
New York: By Direction of the General Convention, Printed by Hugh Gaine, at the Bible, Hanover-Squire, 1795. Folio. [208] pp. Unpaginated but collated complete. Each page printed in two columns. Most copies, like ours and AAS''s, apparently have losses at some lower corners. Our copy has lower corner text loss at pages 15-30, and blank corner loss on preceding leaves. Bibliographic records as far back as 1886 note that, "Lower corners of Morning and Evening Prayer (4 leaves) worn and slightly mutilated" [Leavitt and Co. #7710, 1886]. Bound in attractive gilt-decorated red morocco. Front board printed in gilt: "---- Church | New York | 1822". The Church's name has been scratched out; evidently the book's ownership changed. Marbled endpapers. Except as noted, Very Good.
"This Book of Common Prayer, printed by Hugh Gaine of New York 'for the General Convention' in 1795, was the first folio, or large format, edition for the US Episcopal Church. It was undoubtedly intended to be used as an altar book. The pages measure 16 by a little over 10 inches, or 40.6 by 25.7 cm, and the book is listed in David Griffiths' Bibliography of the Book of Common Prayer as 1795/11."

The 1903 Appleton Library auction by Bangs described this book as, "Doubtless the First Folio Prayer Book published in the United Stales." Gaine printed it for the lectern use of the American Protestant Episcopal Church as an altar book. The result was that leaves printing the morning and evening daily prayers are defective from overuse. For example, AAS describes its copy [the Brinley copy] as follows: "leaves A1, A2, B1 and B2 (p. [17-24] mutilated"
