SPEECH OF JOHN M. CLAYTON, OF DELAWARE, IN DEFENCE OF ZACHARY TAYLOR. DELIVERED IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES, JULY 5, 1848.
[Washington: Towers, 1848]. 16pp, disbound, caption title (as issued). Some blank margin-chipping, Good+.
Clayton, the Delaware Whig, defends his Party's nomination of political cypher Zachary Taylor for President. Many Whigs preferred Daniel Webster or Henry Clay. Clay, however, supports Taylor [who had never voted in his long military career]. He is "a Whig, but not an ultra Whig."
At the head of the title is an interesting warning, suggesting the heated political climate of the times: lawless Democratic Postmasters may illegally dispose of mailed Whig political material, like this Speech. "PLEASE CIRCULATE. Look out for Postmasters! Most of these officers are upright and honorable men, but there are some who will suppress 'the documents,' so far as they can with impunity. . . Let all true Republicans be vigilant and active, and the People will soon give a Buena Vista reception to the cohorts of radicalism."
