Rebutting various "calumnies" against Buchanan, this document says he was never a closet Federalist: indeed, he supported the War of 1812. Moreover, he did not behave dishonorably in the dispute between Henry Clay and Andrew Jackson over the 1824 election, in which Clay threw his support to J.Q. Adams; and, he has always been a stalwart ally of "the laboring man." In all, Buchanan "has been a model of uprightness, quiet dignity and gentle deportment."
