THE FIRST REPORT OF THE SOUTHERN AID SOCIETY, PRESENTED BY THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE AT THE ANNIVERSARY MEETING, OCTOBER 25TH, 1854, WITH AN APPENDIX.

New York: 1854. Original printed wrappers [loosening, spine-chipped], stitched, 60pp. Very Good.

Northern noblesse oblige compels these ministers-- primarily from New York, New England, and elsewhere above the Mason-Dixon Line-- to enhance religious life in the South, which "is inferior to the North in educational development." The North's "decided religious superiority over the South," not only in doctrine and religious institutions but also in quality of ministers, requires the ministry to set aside their "abhorrence of the institution of Slavery," roll up their sleeves, and do serious missionary work in the South. This document prints the Society's Constitution, the Minutes of the Meeting, the First Report, and the call to arms by Rev. Bethune of Brooklyn, and Rev. Newton of Jackson, Mississippi. FIRST EDITION. Sabin 88274. Item #6679
