SPEECH...AT THE DEMOCRATIC STATE CONVENTION, HELD AT CONCORD, JUNE 11TH, 1851.

[Concord, N.H. 1851]. 8pp, disbound, double columns, caption title [as issued]. Lightly worn, Very Good.

Representative Peaslee and his fellow New Hampshire Democrats prepare for the Party's upcoming Presidential Nominating Convention by gathering to express "their views and preferences with regard to the next Presidency." Seeking a unifier, Peaslee correctly asserts "that the safety of the Union will depend upon the action of the Democratic party." Abhorring abolitionists and secessionists, he urges the middle ground. But Franklin Pierce-- truly a Dark Horse if ever there was one-- is not the candidate even of this New Hamphshire Democrat. Peaslee's fellow Granite State Democrat Levi Woodbury-- now a Supreme Court Justice-- is his top choice. The Convention unanimously agrees. Whether, had Woodbury lived, his nomination would have been successful is, of course, unknown. FIRST EDITION. Sabin 59470. Item #6887
